This is a stretch of sea separated from the open waters following the diversion of the Piave. The episode dates back to 1935, when the river, in its artificial course, flowed into the Marina di Eraclea. On October 5, following an unprecedented flood, the river overflowed, abandoning its course and opening its way to flow into its current estuary in Cortellazzo.

The riverbed thus remained isolated from the sea, transforming into a small lagoon of considerable environmental and wildlife interest.

The lagoon is characterized by shallow and calm waters with low and sandy bottoms rich in phytoplankton, where mussels, clams, oysters, crabs, grey mullets, plaice and sole live.

Little egrets, cormorants, sea swallows and little grebes stop there during migration.

Among the various floristic species present, the most characteristic are the halophytic plants, which have a high tolerance to salt: spartina, limonium, salicornia, inula and obione.

A curious fact concerns the ownership of this stretch of coastline. In fact, until 1935 the border between the municipalities of Eraclea and Jesolo was represented by the course of the Piave and the area of the current Laguna del Mort was located to the right of the Piave, in the municipality of Jesolo. After the diversion of the river, this area was found in the territory of Eraclea. To this day the "war of stamped papers" between Eraclea and Jesolo continues.
