Amazingly, the Monument of Freedom from 1935 survived war and occupation and remained a symbol of freedom for Latvian people during times of aggressions and oppresion.
It is symbolized by Milda as symbol for freedom, looking West and holding up 3 stars for the three histoic regions in Latvia ( Kurzeme (deutsch: Kurland) (including Zemgale (deutsch: Semgallen)), Vidzeme (deutsch: Livland) und Latgale (deutsch: Lettgallen). ). During Soviet occupation the stars were preferred to stand for the three Soviet republics Estnia SSR, Latvia SSR und Lithuania SSR.
Closeby, the Museum of Occupation gives testimony of dark times, persecution, mass deportation and oppression during and after WW II, calling out personal tragedies but also amazing courage in times of desperation.
Looking to both creates deep understanding of the fear in the Baltics that freedom is at stake another time, and violance may return unless the Western countries stand up together.

The Freedom Monument in Riga (Brīvības piemineklis) is Latvia's most important national symbol. It was erected in 1935 to honor the fallen soldiers of the War of Independence. The 42-meter-high column bears the figure of freedom "Milda," holding three stars representing Latvia's historical regions. The monument was not destroyed during the Soviet era and later became a central symbol of the Latvian independence movement. Today, it is an important memorial site with an honor guard and a popular meeting place in the city center.
