"... In 1555 the stream was called "Vehebach" and in 1805 also "Wybach".

The stream is now called various names along its length:

In Solingen and Langenfeld (Rhineland) Viehbach up to the Riethrather mill.

After that it is called Riethrather Bach.

The old name "Mühlenbach", west of Hildener Straße, is in the original cadastre from 1829.

The source area of the stream is at about 200 m above sea level, in a wetland in Solingen-Obengönrath, west of the Viebachtalstraße named after it. On the first 6.8 km in Solingen it passes under the expressway named after it several times from right to left and vice versa. Near the former Krüdersheider mill, now only a residential building, it reaches the city limits of Langenfeld. In Düsseldorf near Garath Castle, at 42 m above sea level, the Viehbach/Riethrather Bach into the Garather Mühlenbach. It has travelled a distance of around 13.2 km to get there. From here it is another 7.5 km until it flows into the Rhine together with the Garather Mühlenbach near Urdenbach at 32 m above sea level. On this route they also take in the Langforter-Galkhauser Bach, the Baumberger Graben and the Horster Flutgraben, an outflow of the Itterbach, and become the Urdenbacher Altrhein.

Over the course of five centuries, twelve water power plants were established on the Viehbach, including hammer mills, grinding mills, fruit and oil mills. The former Garather mill, later a sawmill, was also dependent on the additional water from the Viehbach. ..."
