Maritime Access has built a new maritime gate for the twenty-first century in the port of Ostend. The strategic plan for the port has improved accessibility and better protected the city of Ostend against flooding. The two new breakwaters were designed in such a way that they must be able to withstand a storm that attacks our coast statistically once every 1000 years. Protection was therefore significantly increased.

The new eastern breakwater, which extends 600 meters into the sea, together with the western dam, demarcates the new port entrance.

Ships up to 200 meters in length can now enter and leave the port smoothly and safely. The usable sand that became available during the construction of the new navigation channel was used for coastal defense and for the realization of nature compensations.
