    The oldest part of the church is the cloverleaf choir, which is closely related to that of Romanesque basilicas in Cologne, Neuss and Speyer. The semicircular main apse has three also semicircular adjoining radiating chapels. The two cross arms, on the other hand, are polygonally closed. Between the apse and the transept are two choir towers, a typical Rhenish characteristic, as well as the dwarf galleries in the choir apse and the transepts. The eight-sided crossing tower is also a Rhineland characteristic.

    The nave was probably built between 1220 and 1244 and is the most soberly executed part of the church on the outside. The interior is characterized by the late Romanesque tendency to verticality. The elevation is in three parts and consists of the series of piers and arches between the nave and aisles, a gallery above and the clerestory at the top. Nave and aisles are vaulted with rib vaults. Because the church thus possesses the most important constructive properties of the early Gothic (architecture), it is also considered to belong to the Romano-Gothic.

    The west building was built between 1244 and 1260. It is believed that this part of the church was not completed due to poor soil conditions. In the 18th century, a square baroque bell tower was built on it.

          "One of the most beautiful remnants of Romanesque architecture in the Netherlands is the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Munsterkerk on the Munsterplein in Roermond. The church was built in the early 13th century and has been rebuilt and restored several times. The west side of the church has Gothic features, while the east side is built in the late Romanesque style.

          Count Gerard founded the Abbey of Munster in 1218. The Munster Church was originally built as part of a monastery: the Cistercian Abbey. Two years later the church was consecrated. Only a few photos and drawings remain of the once beautiful monastery quarters. Only the street name Abdijhof still reminds us of where the monastery buildings once stood."
