The Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor in Jimena is a historical and architectural gem dating back to the 15th century. Here are some of its notable features:
The church combines Gothic and Renaissance styles. The Gothic elements are visible in the cross vaults of the Capilla Mayor, while the main entrance has a semicircular Renaissance arch.
The church was built on the site of a former mosque, reflecting the transition from Islamic to Christian influence in the region. It is named after the day that King Ferdinand III reconquered Jimena in 1234, on the feast of Santiago.
Inside, the church has three naves, separated by tall stone columns with rounded arches. The Capilla Mayor has a star-shaped vault, and there are several religious statues, including those of the Virgen del Rosario and Santiago el Mayor. The bell tower, which rises above the village, was added in the 20th century and is a landmark in Jimena.
