Moonshine Shelter gets its name from a local legend related to moonshining in the area. While the specifics of the legend vary, the common thread is the belief that illegal alcohol production (moonshine) occurred near the shelter. There is a nice fire pit, and due to its high point along the trail, it provides a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. The shelter sits in a “holler” next to a spring-fed creek, and there is a small pond nearby that is also a dependable water source year-round. Although there’s no sign of a whiskey still, it’s an excellent spot to spend the night and read a few entries in the shelter journal.
