Spacious, formerly closed farm, possibly to be identified as the laathof Sint-Maartenshof, belonging to the chapter of Saint-Martin in Liège; this was originally an allodial property that was donated to the Saint-Martin church by Willem van Noville around 1155-1164; also called the Dandoy farm. On the Ferraris map (1771-77) and in the Atlas van de Buurtwegen (1844) always indicated as a large, closed farm.

It is this farm, the Martenshof, that gave the small municipality (barely 200 inhabitants) its name. The name Mettekoven is nothing other than Martinshoef or Martenshof, in Latin «Martini curtis» and «Martincourt» in French, or simply the farm of Martin. Originally there was only one farm or agricultural company that belonged to a certain Martin or rather to a church institution, dedicated to Saint Martin.
