    After the historical Joan of Arc in 1429, during the Hundred Years' War, helped French troops locked in Orléans to defeat the English, they led Charles VII to his royal anointing in Reims. The statue of Jeanne on horseback by Paul Dubois on Place Cardinal Luçon in front of the cathedral commemorates this event.

        Joan of Arc, known in German-speaking countries as "Johanna of Orleans", (1412? to 1431) was an important person in the history of France at the time of the so-called 100 Years' War between the kingdoms of England and France. After her capture, she was condemned as a heretic (at the instigation of the English) and burned, but two and a half decades later (at the instigation of the French) this sentence was overturned. She is the patroness of France.
        The music group OMD (Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark) dedicated a song to her in the early 1980s: "Maid of Orleans". Can be found on Youtube here:

              This Joan of Arc statue was commissioned in 1890 by sculptor Paul Dubois and inaugurated by French President Félix Faure on July 14, 1896, in Reims' Place du Cardinal-Luçon. The monument was funded through public subscription initiated by the National Academy of Reims in 1888, with the statue completed by founder Pierre Bingen in 1896. Originally positioned on the cathedral parvis with Joan's back to Notre-Dame Cathedral, the statue depicts her emerging after Charles VII's coronation ceremony.

                In 1886, the National Academy of Reims, under the aegis of its president, Auguste Leseur, commissioned Paul Dubois[1] to create an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc for the cathedral square.

                A subscription was launched in Reims. 3,500 subscribers contributed 147,352 francs. Léon Bourgeois, Member of Parliament for the Marne and Minister of Public Instruction, contributed 12,000 francs. Donations also came from major champagne houses, members of the National Academy of Reims, the Marne department, and the Reims Savings Bank. Since the subscription was national, donations poured in from all over France, sometimes quite modest, but they demonstrated the pervasive and popular enthusiasm for the warrior heroine.
