She gets a lot of visitors, “Fat Marie”. Goethe is not the only one who has had a dialogue with her. She has a lot to tell, the beautiful old English oak. Take your time and listen to their stories sitting on the bench.

The pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) is said to have germinated in the year 1107 on the Great Malche, a bay that forms the northern tip of the Tegeler Lake, near the castle Tegel. The tree was given the name of the brothers Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, who spent their youth in the castle Tegel, in reference to the well-dressed cook of the castle. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also visited the tree during his travels in 1778 and stayed in his shadow.

“Big Marie” - that's how a cook was once called. Today the oldest living resident of Berlin is known after her. The exact age of Fat Marie is uncertain - but she can no longer be asked about it. Their age is estimated to be 800 to 900 years. If you only have question marks in your head: Fat Marie is the oldest tree in town. Older than the city itself.
Since July 9, 21, it has even been officially a German national heritage tree.

In 1237, Fat Marie was already observing the hustle and bustle of the growing, medieval city. Later she sees robber barons and kings riding through the Great Malche. The area around Lake Tegel is the home of Dicken Marie. Many trees grew around them. She is no longer lonely today. The well-known poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is said to have paid her a visit when he was passing through. Only later is the corpse (lat. Quercus robur) baptized by two boys with the name "Fat Marie".
These two fellows are none other than Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt. You grow up in Tegel Castle. Statistics, economics, natural law and philosophy are on her private schedule. For a change, they occasionally roam the woods. Always looking for new adventures. You will also pass the huge oak tree. According to legend, the tree amazes the two boys and reminds them of their castle cook. From now on they call the oak "Fat Marie" like their sturdy cook.
From the Tegeler Hafenbrücke it is only a few minutes' walk to the Dicken Marie, which is waiting for your visit in the Tegeler Forest. Following a visit to the castle or a steamboat trip on Lake Tegel, it is worth taking a detour to the famous oak tree. The 26 meter high tree shines with calm and wisdom. Those who want to enjoy nature further can also visit the nearby Humboldteiche.

The Humboldts were here, Goethe, etc. And they should know. Berlin's oldest tree - a real blessing!

I would find a notice board with the dates and the history of the tree on site. On March 9th, 2021 I passed fat Marie again and found a notice board with background information today.

an old tree worth protecting. Unfortunately, many do not see it that way and also go behind the barriers.

This tree is actually still alive and is certainly impressive. There are thicker and probably taller oaks in Berlin and Brandenburg, but you really have to be amazed at its enormous age: it is said to be 800-900 years old. Of course, no one knows for sure. It is worth stopping for a moment and thinking about your own existence! A feeling like awe can arise.

Anyone hiking through the Tegel Forest soon realizes: There's no forest here, history sits here. And in the middle of it all, as if she had made it all possible, is "Fat Marie." An oak tree so old that even Goethe lingered beneath it – probably not because he was tired, but because in this place, one cannot help but be still.

Its trunk is gnarled, like an old thought that never fades. The bark speaks in runes that only the moss can decipher. One involuntarily imagines how generations of feet found their way to it – the Humboldt brothers perhaps with their satchels, walkers with picnic baskets, thinkers with too many questions. Marie simply stood there. Fat, yes. But not ponderous. Rather: imperturbable.

There are trees that are green. There are trees that are tall. And then there are trees like her – they are there. That's all it takes. When the wind blows through the leaves, it sounds like a long breath. Maybe even a sigh. Or an "Oh, yes," the kind only old ladies say, those who've seen it all before – and still listen.

The trail bends slightly before her, as if bowing. Smart people do the same.
