    The prime meridian was first established by Sir George Airy in 1851, and by 1884, over two-thirds of all ships and tonnage used it as the reference meridian on their charts and maps. In the same year, a conference with delegates from 25 states selected the meridian as the official prime meridian. France did not participate in the vote and continued to use the Paris meridian for several decades.

        An important historical reference point. The current prime meridian can be found about 100 meters further west in the park. We recommend using your smartphone's GPS to find it. Here you can stand with one foot in the west and the other in the east, play west-east tug-of-war or finger wrestling, completely free of charge, and enjoy the wonderful view. A picnic blanket and, of course, a picnic are highly recommended.

            For those interested: Up at the Royal Observatory is the Zero Meridian. You can stand there with one foot on either side of the line.

            Unfortunately, and we really don't like this, you actually have to pay £26 per person to enter. We'd understand that for access to the observatory, but not for this line!!!

                  At the Royal Observatory on the hill in Greenwich Park, a brass strip embedded in the ground marks the Prime Meridian. It is the reference point for all longitudes on Earth, dividing it into a western and eastern hemisphere. It marks the beginning of a new universal time day when it is midnight here in Greenwich. At night, the Prime Meridian is marked by a laser beam that extends far beyond East London.

                      We went there specifically for the 0 Meridian (and not for the observatory) and were shocked to discover that you only get in to see this line with an entrance fee of 26 pounds per person. Thanks, but we passed!
