    In the eighth century, an abbey was founded on the Sint-Petrusberg by three Anglo-Saxon priests Plechelmus, Wiro and Otger. The village of Sint Odilienberg later arose at the foot of this. No remains of the original abbey church have been preserved above ground. The current church is only partially original. The building was restored between 1880 and 1883 and added to what it looks like today.

        A hill on the edge of the Dutch town of Sint Odiliënberg and known as Sint-Petrusberg is the site of two Roman Catholic churches
        - the basilica dedicated to the saints Wiro, Plechelm and Otger
        - and the chapel Onze Lieve Vrouwekapel, which stands directly next to it.
        The chapel dedicated to the Mother of God was originally used as a parish church. The basilica, on the other hand, initially served as the place of worship of a monastery founded by the Anglo-Saxon missionaries Wiro, Plechelm and Otger in the eighth century and, according to tradition, founded by Pippin the Middle.
        It was not until 1680 that the much larger basilica took over the function of the parish church from the chapel.

        - - -The two churches built on the hill on the edge of the Rur valley, which gradually tapers off here, tower prominently over the town and the adjacent river valley.
        . . . Today, the Sint-Petrusberg is an erosion relic of late Pleistocene low terrace deposits of the Rur

        . . .further repair work was carried out, which finally led to the renewed consecration of the renovated church on April 26, 1668 under the (new) patronage of Saints Wiro, Plechelmus and Otgerus.
        . . . by 1870 the northern choir tower was repaired. Between 1880 and 1883 the basilica was then repaired with the addition of new components.
        During this repair the church received its current external appearance.
