A great challenge is the climb to these 4,200 meters of altitude on a bike. The last stretch to reach the top is harsher with wind. You'll arrive hot and sweaty, but the cold will continue to bite, so always be prepared for dehydration and the drop in temperature.
The lagoon is located within the crater of Nevado de Toluca (Xinantécatl), covered with freshwater from melting ice and mountain seeps. It measures 400 meters long by 200 meters wide and has a depth of 12 meters.
In the 1990s, you could dive in dry suits or wetsuits for freezing water. Diving was done with instruments due to the poor visibility. It was an incredible but frigid experience. Currently, it is prohibited or only requires a special permit.
