There are almost 7,800 nature conservation areas located on private land.

A private landowner can sell an area included in the national nature conservation programme or the Natura 2000 network to the state for a fair price or protect it as a private nature conservation area for compensation. In both cases, the possibilities for recreational use of the area remain largely unchanged. There are almost 7,800 nature conservation areas located on private land.

The decision to establish a nature conservation area is permanent and is entered in the land register.

An area can also be protected for a fixed period. The landowner and the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) can agree to protect the area either completely or for certain measures for a maximum of 20 years at a time. The agreement is also entered in the land register. An area protected by agreement is not a nature conservation area.

In addition to areas included in conservation programs, other privately owned areas can also be established as nature reserves under the Nature Conservation Act, for example as part of the METSO program focusing on forest nature.
