The Thick Tower is a medieval tower in the town of Zerbst, Anhalt, Germany. It was originally a defensive tower, but since the 15th century has been used as a freestanding bell tower for St. Bartholomew's Church.

The Thick Tower is said to have been built in the 13th century as part of the fortifications of Zerbst Castle. From 1432 onwards, the defensive tower was used as a bell tower for the nearby court church of St. Bartholomew. In 1565, the tower was given a Renaissance-style bell storey with pointed-arch sound windows. The builder is said to have been Ludwig Binder. In 1701, a publisher and bookseller, Gottfried Zimmermann, established a bookstore in the lower vault of the Thick Tower. This store operated for more than 100 years, until 1812.

During air raids on the town of Zerbst a few weeks before the end of World War II (April 16, 1945), the bell storey and the Renaissance gable, all ceilings, and an original cross vault above the ground floor were destroyed. After war-related damage, the tower was covered with a tent roof. This roof was damaged in a storm. New bells were installed in the Thick Tower in 1969. In 1998/99, immediate renovation was carried out. This was financed by the federal government, the state of Saxony-Anhalt, and the city of Zerbst. The cost was €170,000. Since the bells are showing their age after more than 50 years of use, they will be replaced in 2023 by bells cast in 1973 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from the Catholic Church of St. Josef in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven, which was deconsecrated in 2018.[1]

The building has a square floor plan measuring approximately 11 by 11 meters. The eaves height is approximately 21.5 meters.[2] The tower is constructed of rubble stone in the Gothic style. The northern and western entrances, as well as the sound openings and blinds in the bell storey, are designed with pointed arches. A double-leaf gate to the east has a basket arch, and a door to the south is rectangular. Above the eastern gate is a tower clock. Small windows at about half their height have segmental arches. Other elements of the facade design include simple pilaster strips in the bell storey and cornices. The tower's tent roof is covered with red plain tiles. The top is marked by a copper tower ball.
