    A fen is a small, mostly shallow lake that occurs on Pleistocene sandy soils. Fens have varying water levels and are rarely larger than a few hectares. Fens are exclusively understood to mean natural waters.

          The Heidebloemplas is connected to the Kreelse Plas via a ditch. There, water rises from the bottom (seepage water). Only when the Kreelse Plas overflows does the water run through the ditch and various pools to the Heidebloemplas. During prolonged dry periods, the water in the Heidebloemplas will therefore become lower and lower.
