Overlooking the Nile, this passage and gate lies just to the west of the Great Temple of Isis. It once had its own columned porch, which has unfortunately not survived. The remaining walls are decorated with reliefs mostly depicting the Roman emperors Hadrian (AD 117-138) and Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180), which is why it is known as the Gate of Hadrian.

Some of these scenes are among the most fascinating on the entire island. Isis is depicted with the head of a cow, emphasising her association with the annual Nile flood.
