History: A plaque at the base of the observation tower also explains the strategic importance of the lookout point. During the Crimean War in 1854, a telegraph line was built between Hanko and Kronstadt, St. Petersburg. Between Hankoniemi and Pitkäpaaten, there were 42 optical telegraph stations. One of the stations on the line was located at Haikkoon Lennätinvuori. The telegraph line was only in operation for two summers, as it was replaced in 1855 by the electromagnetic telegraph line from St. Petersburg to Helsinki.
