The Hildburghausen–Lindenau-Friedrichshall railway, also known as the Hildburghausen-Heldburg Railway, was a nearly 30-kilometer-long narrow-gauge railway (meter gauge) connecting Hildburghausen with the Heldburg region to the south.
The railway was a "Meining State Railway" (Meiningsche Staatsbahn), as the construction costs of 750,000 marks were largely financed by the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen.
The railway was built according to a contract dated January 12, 1877, by the Localbahn-Bau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft Wilhelm Hostmann & Co. of Hanover, which also initially operated the line until the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Vering & Waechter finally took over.
