Selectively removing unwanted species from a forest (e.g. exotics, non-native species in an unwanted location) can be done in a number of ways. Cutting down (also called “low cutting”) is obvious, but it causes a lot of disruption (other trees are damaged) and a messy forest floor that is more difficult to access for further maintenance.
An environmentally friendly alternative is tree ringing, where the sap flow is interrupted to slowly kill the tree.
