For many, this section of the Uinta Highline Trail is their first few miles along this epic trail. For others it is their last. Regardless of which direction you choose to hike the Uinta Highline Trail, this portion of it takes you between Leidy Peak and the Leidy Peak Trailhead in an open, nearly treeless mountain environment to Gabbro Pass, which stands at about 11,700 feet. You have the option to take a detour to the summit of Leidy Peak; there is no official trail to the top, but it is not a difficult climb up its gentle, grassy slopes to the top.
