The Welzheim Observatory is located in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park in the Langenberg district, near Welzheim. It serves as a public observatory and observation station for the Carl Zeiss Planetarium Stuttgart.
The observatory building including the west dome was built in 1991/92 by the town of Welzheim with the support of the Rems-Murr district. The telescopes and technical equipment were provided by the state capital Stuttgart. The Welzheim Observatory was opened during a ceremony on September 6, 1992.
It is operated by the observer group of the Carl Zeiss Planetarium Stuttgart. On-site support and entertainment is provided by the Welzheim Forest Association.
Public star tours are offered on fixed dates (3 times a week) when the weather is clear. Group tours for up to 30 people are also possible.
In spring 2017, the observatory was expanded to include a fourth, small dome.
