Be sure to go all the way to the top and enjoy the view. However, the steps are relatively narrow and steep, so you should be sure-footed. Behind the rock is another small cave, which is also worth seeing.

The view towards Manebach, Moosbach, Meyersgrund and all the neighboring ridges is truly exorbitant. Highly recommended. Extra tip: don't forget your binoculars.

Once, at the end of the 13th century, there was a castle here on the stone belonging to the von Witzleben family. The castle was used to monitor the Erfurt-Nuremberg high-altitude trade route that ran past it. In the 14th century, the castle was abandoned, probably because of the increased use of the moated castle in the town of Ilmenau (behind the municipal building, next to the current PI Ilmenau), and it was finally used as a quarry. Today, nothing is left of its existence.

Nice place to rest in front of the rock, benches and tables available. You have a nice view of the rock from below. I can't judge how the view is from above .... The stairs go up very steeply, so nothing for those who are afraid of heights 🙈

From Kickelhahn the Goethe hiking trail leads downhill to the Großer Hermannstein. After climbing the rock you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The cave in the rock was artificially carved out and probably served in the Middle Ages as a guardroom for a castle that was located on the rock. Goethe visited her several times and describes her as: "(she is) my beloved abode, where I would like to live and stay." Goethe worked and drew here 🙏🦊
