In 1756–1851, the Degučiai Monastery was the spiritual center of the Old Believers of the Baltic States. Thousands of pilgrims used to come here, there was a hostel, a shelter for the elderly. In 1799, the Cathedral Great Chapel of the Holy Intercession of the Mother of God (cоборная большая моленна во имя Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы) was built under the care of Tito Tanaev (Russian: Тит Антонович Танаев). In 1851, the tsarist authorities liquidated the local Old Believer community.
The chapel is located on the northeastern outskirts of Degučiai, south of the existing Old Believer cemetery. It was built with donated funds, on a private plot of land. An Old Believer memorial cross stands at this place.
