Palazzo Cusani was built in the second half of the 15th century by order of the Parma branch of the Cusani family, originally from Milan. In the 17th century it was sold to the Municipality of Parma and became the seat of the Faculties of Medicine and Law of the University of Parma. The pictorial decorations, partly still visible, date back to that period and alternate allegorical scenes with heraldic coats of arms and inscriptions referring to the professors of the University. In the following centuries the Palace changed its purpose several times: Mint of the Bourbon State, Court of Maria Luigia of Austria, school building in the 20th century. The transfer to the cloister of the statuary group “Hercules and Antaeus” – created in 1687 by the Flemish Theodor Van der Sturck – originally located in the Ducal Garden, dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Having fallen into disuse in the 1980s, the Palace was reopened in November 2002 as the seat of the Casa della Musica.
