The tower was built as part of the expansion of the water supply in 1933.

Built in 1933, it initially served the city's water supply. After the end of the war, the tower was prevented from being blown up. Soon there was no longer any use for the tower and it was a ruin for 30 years. In 1972 the upper part of the water tower was destroyed by fire, which was followed by a new roof construction in 1989. Even in the days of the GDR there were efforts to restore the tower, which failed due to the fall of the Wall. Only in 2002 was the tower reopened as it stands now.
The city information is located on the ground floor. For 2 euros you can climb the tower and pass a small archaeological exhibition and changing art exhibitions. A wedding room of the registry office is also housed here, but it is not open to the public. The viewing platform is on the 7th floor, from which one has a great all-round view of the city and the surrounding area.

Next to St. Mary's Church, the brick-red, cylindrical water tower dominates Grimmen's skyline and is visible from afar. At 32.5 meters, the second tallest building in the city was built in 1933 as part of a central water supply for the then 5,500 residents.
