Located in Kashiwara, Gose City, this shrine enshrines the deity Kamu Yamatoiharebiko. It is said to be the place where the first Emperor Jimmu ascended to the throne.
The Nihon Shoki states that Emperor Jimmu's palace was southeast of Mount Unebi, but this is mistaken and it should have been southwest, and there is a theory that this place has long been the assumed location of Emperor Jimmu's Kashihara Palace.
The Yamato-shi of 1736 records that "Kashihara Palace is located in Kashiwara Village," and when Motoori Norinaga visited the current Kashihara area, he heard from the locals that "Kashibara is about one ri southwest from here," and recorded this in his Sugagasa Nikki. Intrigued by this story, essayist Masako Shirasu visited the Jinmu Tenno Shrine and wrote in her 1971 book "Hidden Village" that "this is a fitting site for the palace of Emperor Jinmu, who ascended to the throne with the support of local lords."
Yoshimasa Fujii (68), head of the Jinmu Tenno Shrine, said, "There is a strong belief that this is the site of Emperor Jinmu's palace. The old place name, "Yaku" in "Yakugami," apparently means palace. There is a legend that at the beginning of the Meiji period, they burned the supporting documents, avoiding the designation, because they thought that if it was designated as the site of a palace, they would have to move."
Near the shrine are Mount Kunimi and Mount Honma, both of which are considered possible locations for Hohoma Hill, where Emperor Jimmu is said to have looked out over the country from a high vantage point after completing his eastern expedition.
This area is located in Kashiwara, Gose City (formerly Kashiwara, Wakigami village), and was originally a dense area of oak.
