The Deer Leap segment gets its name from a lava neck that rises 1,500 feet (0.46 km) above the river. The trail offers a nice challenge, as it runs high along the canyon rim with spectacular views. Along the way, there are two bridges where you'll cross Medicine and Slide Creeks. There is also an open bluff 500 feet (0.15 km) above the North Umpqua River, ideal for a spot to stop, take a break, enjoy a snack, and capture a few photos.
