The church was built in the Romanesque period as a fieldstone building. It is assumed that it was part of a Franciscan monastery. The short nave has a recessed choir and is closed off by a semicircular apse. The Romanesque round-arch windows from the time of construction are still there. Philipp Melanchthon is said to have carried out a church visitation at the church in 1533, after the introduction of the Reformation. An octagonal wooden roof turret was placed above the west gable in 1872. Its top is covered with slate.

The church suffered damage in the Second World War. It was repaired in 1952/53.

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. There is a triumphal arch between the nave and the choir. In the dome of the apse there is a wall painting dating back to around 1200. It had been painted over over time and was rediscovered in 1946. It depicts Christ enthroned. A second seated figure is probably Mary. John the Baptist and a bishop are depicted next to the four symbols of the evangelists.

The small carved altar dates from the end of the 15th century and in its shrine a Madonna can be seen on the crescent moon in a halo. The altar has narrow wings. On the right, James the Great is depicted above a saint and on the left John the Baptist. Below John was originally Saint Dorothea, but she was stolen. On the outside of the wings, remnants of the former painting with four figures of saints can still be seen.

The church also has a wooden, rather roughly shaped baptismal font, which is believed to have been made in the 17th century.
