A unique monument is erected in front of Winnental Castle between the gatehouse and the main building: a pug carved in stone commemorates the dog of Duke Karl Alexander. As a field marshal in Austrian service led this imperial army during the Battle of Belgrade in 1717 against the Ottoman troops. During the fray, according to the legend, the man and the dog are said to have lost each other, whereupon the pug ran back to Winnental. After his death, his master built this monument out of joy and gratitude.

Legend has it that during the turmoil the master and dog got lost, causing the pug to run back to Winnental. After his death, the castle residents erected this monument to him in memory of his loyalty and kindness.
