                The largest earth dam in Europe, the Mattmark Dam, is located south of the Saas Valley. The reservoir used to generate electricity is a popular destination and is fascinating not only because of its technical details, but also because of its wildly romantic location. The modern mountain restaurant with exhibition room is located at 2,205 meters. You can enjoy the unobstructed view of the reservoir and a breathtaking panorama of the Monte Moro pass.

                      The eastern side of the lake was closed in August 2024, so it was not possible to walk around it. On the western side you can climb to the Britannia Hut SAC (Glacier Trail).
                      The current status of a possible walk around the lake can be found here: saas-fee.ch/de/erlebniswelten/mattmark-staudamm-sommer
                      In August 2024: The hiking trail along the Mattmark reservoir is open on the right side of the lake to the Distelalp and further to the Monte Moro Pass.
                      The left bank of the lake, as well as the Ofental Pass, Antrona Pass and Jazzilicka remain closed.
