A perron or piroen is a medieval monument, essentially a hard stone column with an orb in the shape of a pine cone with a cross on it. The monument usually stands on a stepped pedestal. It is a symbol of freedom, autonomy and justice. In many cities, the perron marked the place where justice was administered. The origin of the symbol is obscure and possibly pagan.
Perron possibly refers to the stepped pedestal, a perron. The Walloon word perron is an augmentation of pierre (stone), a large stone. Piroen may also be derived from the Latin pirum, which means 'pear', a reference to the shape of the monument. This is probably also where the name of the architectural ornament piron originated.

The platform is the symbol of the freedoms and rights of Liège and Loon. The current column was unveiled on 10 September 2000; the platform itself dates from around 1200 when Borgloon was granted city rights and became one of the Good Cities of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.

Symbolism: the steps express the hierarchy between speaker and audience; the column represents society and is a sign of power, authority and rule; the pine cone is said to be the symbol of the assembled community and the scales indicate the individual members; the cross refers to the spiritual power of the prince-bishop of Liège.
