According to legend, the devil is said to have had the idea to build a staircase to heaven. Together with its neighbour, the Kleiner Wolfstein, the Großer Wolfstein was formed around 25 million years ago.

In 1984, the Westerwald district designated the Großer Wolfstein as a natural monument. Changes are therefore only permitted here with the approval of the authorities. The face and mysticism are thus preserved, much to the delight of the many hikers who like to visit this quiet place.

Legend has it that the devil wanted to build a staircase to heaven. But as he flew with his load from Kirburg towards Marienberg, the WITT (a rope made from willow branches) broke and the falling basalt stones formed a huge pile of stones.

Some see the Wolfsteins as a former Celtic place of worship.
