Landsberg am Lech is a large county seat and the administrative seat of the same district in the administrative district of Upper Bavaria. The center of the old town is the Marienbrunnen, built around 1700, on the main square. A sculpture of a Maria Immaculata by the Tyrolean sculptor Streiter (1783) stands in the center of the fountain and fresh water bubbles from the dolphins into the basin. Four large marble balls complete the fountain.

Around 1135 a settlement called Phetine in what later became the town of Landsberg was mentioned in a document, but it did not yet have town rights. In 1158, Duke Henry the Lion relocated the important Salt Road to a more southern route, building a bridge over the Lech near Phetine.

From 1700, the New Town Hall was built in several phases. From 1719 to 1721 the building was enlarged by Dominikus Zimmermann and redesigned with a finely structured, towering gable front. The windows were scaled in size according to the importance of the rooms behind. The stucco facade is one of the most important profane creations of the master builder, who lived from 1716 to 1757 as a citizen in Landsberg and temporarily also provided a mayor's office here.
The town hall housed the breadhouse on the ground floor and the detention cell in the cellar. On the upper floors were the two chambers of the city parliament, the small room on the first floor was available to the Inner Council, the larger one on the second floor was assigned to the outer council. In 1717, construction work began on the ballroom.
