It was probably 300 years ago, during the baroque heyday of pilgrimages. From the Unterland – i.e. up from the Inn Valley – many pilgrims made their way to Birkenstein in the Leitzachtal to see the miraculous miraculous image. The pilgrims' route led over the Auerberg. After the steep, strenuous ascent - after all, there were 400 meters in altitude to overcome - the pilgrims were tired, hungry and thirsty. The more or less believing journeymen didn't hesitate and asked questions and helped themselves to the farmers' fields - and stole everything edible: apples, plums and turnips. The farmer von Schnitzenbaum was so enraged by this thievery that he lay in wait and caught one of the pilgrims in flagrante delicto. The guy had just dug three turnips out of his field. Then "Scheriff Schnitzenbaumer" took action. A scenery as known from western epics. The powerfully built farmer grabbed the turnip thief. Then he tied a rope around a thick branch of the field linden tree, put the criminal's head in the noose - and hanged him. The lifeless body dangled from the branch. And you can literally hear the accordion playing the song of death. At that time people were rabid and brutal but also religious. As punishment for the bloody deed he committed “in passion”, Schnitzenbaumer had to use a bricklayer’s trowel to atone for his sinful actions. So much for the legend of the thieving pilgrim and the lynching farmer. However, it seems questionable whether this Wild West tidbit is true. What is certain is that the simple chapel near Schnitzenbaumer-Hof was built in 1707 and dedicated to Saint Koloman.
