Ostgroßefehn windmill

The windmill, built in 1804, is a two-story gallery-style Dutch windmill with a compass rose, miller's house and extensions. The ridge height is 21 m, the gallery height 8 m, and the four louvre blades today have a blade distance of 22 m. The three grinding gears and one pelling gear of this grain mill were mainly used to process buckwheat, the main crop of the fen colonies at the time. A system for generating electricity was installed around 1900. The mill was shut down in 1968. From 1969 to 1988, the mill was used as a museum of mill and fen history. In 1992/1993, it was rebuilt and completely renovated. While the buildings were expanded in the old style, the existing and functional mill technology was given additional modern technology in the form of a generator that feeds electrical energy into the grid.

There is a picture exhibition in the mill and the adjacent packing house, and the tourist office for the municipality of Großefehn is housed in the miller's house. The barn of the miller's house is now used as a "barn hotel" and event hall.
