    The "repressed Allgäuers" - spitting fountain, Wangen im Allgäu
    Spitting fountain
    In the summer of 1997, a monument was erected to the "repressed" Allgäuers in front of the sacristan's house at the transition from the upper to the lower town. The saying that of six Allgäuers "bent on top of each other", the lowest one is as "repressed" as the highest one, was brilliantly implemented by the Lower Bavarian artist Joseph Michael Neustifter from Eggenfelden with the fountain sculpture he created. At the inauguration, the then mayor Dr. Jörg Leist admitted that men are a little more "repressed" than the fairer sex, which is why the sculpture is "pure-bred". The artist suggests that the clergy are not free of "repression" either with the lowest figure, which represents a clergyman. Various figures such as the "soft-spoken man" and the "card player" weigh on him. The lower figure with the mask held up is the sculpture that turns it into a fountain: it spits at unsuspecting passers-by at intervals, at least during the warm season. Anyone who gets wet in this way is responsible for the damage and does not need to worry about the mockery or malicious joy of those around them!
