The Father and Son picture stories remain Erich Ohser's best-known works. They tell the story of a father and his young son as they grapple with everyday problems and sometimes experience great adventures. They quickly became popular and are known in many countries around the world, likely because they are mostly wordless.

On October 1, 1993, the e.o.plauen Gallery opened in Plauen, a joint project of the city of Plauen and its twin city Siegen, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Salamander AG. Since 1995, the city of Plauen, together with the e.o.plauen Society, has awarded the e.o.plauen Prize in his memory. On September 24, 2010, the Erich Ohser House was inaugurated in Plauen.
