The 412 meter long and 75 meter high dam wall of the Hohenwarthe dam is simply impressive. It was built between 1936 and 1942. At that time, the 250 residents of the village of Preßwitz had to be resettled because the village was flooded by the reservoir.

The reservoir is used today, among other things, to generate energy, but also has a lot to offer in terms of nature and leisure activities. On the shore of the lake, for example, there are many bathing spots where you can jump into the cool water while taking a break.

The dam was built from 1936 to 1942 and extends over a length of 412 m and 75 meters in height. With a capacity of 182 million cubic meters of water, the Hohenwarte dam is the fourth largest in Germany. The Hohenwartestausee belongs to the almost 80 km long Saalekaskade on the upper Saale consisting of five dams and hydroelectric power plants.
