It was designated a national historic site in 1948 and added to the list of cultural properties that make up the Japan Heritage in July 2021.
It is also known as the "Futakamiyama Abandoned Temple Ruins."
It was carved into a large rock in two places, one large and one small, with the larger one measuring 7.6m wide, 6.14m high, and 4.5m deep.
A triad of Buddha statues is carved into the left wall, but most of it has peeled off due to weathering, making it impossible to see the Buddha statues clearly.
Unfortunately, there are no records or documents left about when the cave was built, who was involved, or how it was built, so it is unknown.
Based on the age of artifacts excavated from the cave and its surroundings, it is believed to have been built at least in the first half of the Nara period, but this is only a guess.
