As early as 1898, Arnold Janssen bought the Langenfelder Hof in St. Wendel (Diocese of Trier) to found a mission house in southwest Germany. The foundation stone was laid in 1899. An important training center for numerous religious missionaries grew. When the first missionaries returned due to illness or age, St. Wendel became a place of residence and retirement for them. For a long time, the former Langenfelderhof with its workshops, agriculture and gardening remained the economic basis of the mission house. Over 100 brothers received their professional and spiritual training here. The foundation stone of the large mission house church was laid in 1910. From the grammar school, which opened in 1899 with 10 pupils, over 500 pupils took up the profession of priest.

In 1898 the Missionary Society of Steyler Missionaries was founded in St. Wendel by Father Arnold Janssen and the mission house was then built. The complex includes the ethnological museum, the mission bookstore and the mission house church. The mission house church has the shape of a cross. The 36 m high crossing tower that protrudes from the three-aisled church is remarkable. The interior is in the late Romanesque style. The huge triumphal cross hangs down from the choir arch and the numerous colored windows impress with their stained glass.
