Witches' Tower, Sempach

Tower on the southeast corner of the city, which was built in the 13th century.

Originally, the Witches' Tower probably served as a city castle and thus as a place of residence and residence for representatives of the noble rule. Later, it marked the visible southeast corner of the city's fortifications.

Since the 18th century, the Witches' Tower had been left to constant structural decay until it was extensively renovated on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Sempach. Independently of the many renovation and refurbishment projects carried out on the occasion of the 600th anniversary celebration in Sempach, the Sempach Theater Society and the Warriors' Group converted the Witches' Tower into a clubhouse between 1986 and 1988. Today, the Sempach Theater Society uses the tower as a clubhouse and makes it available to interested tenants.

Historically, very little to no information is available about the Witches' Tower from its earlier period. The tower was built in the 13th century, adjacent to the then-existing city wall in the city moat. Unfortunately, it burned down twice, first during the city fire of 1477 and the second time around 1750. Initially, such towers served as defensive towers. Traces indicate that it later served as a residential tower.
