Before this part of Bischofswerda was redesigned and modernized in 2005, archaeological excavations were carried out here. Among other things, the foundations of the historic town hall were found. The city was founded in the 12th century: bischofswerda.de.

The market place, or "old market" is the heart of Bischofswerda. In the middle is the media tower, surrounded by the foundations of the Renaissance town hall. The media tower shows the height of the former town hall. It contains an LED block in the upper part. The tower is a modern means of communication, cleavage and identification point, meeting point and recognition feature for guests of the city.
