A blue dyer is someone who, using the dye indigo, for example, dyes clothing blue, such as a suit, almost to black. Dyeing clothing was cheaper than buying new clothing. This was done a lot in the past.

Indigo is an important pigment with a distinct blue colour, which is also called indigo. Indigo was originally extracted from various types of plants as a natural pigment.

The most important application of indigo is dyeing jeans. However, the colour is also used to dye wool navy blue. Indigo does not bind particularly strongly to the fibres in the textile, which means that wear and repeated washing cause the dye to slowly disappear from the fabric.

It is believed that India is the oldest supplier of indigo to Europe since the Middle Ages. The Greek word for dye, indikon, even refers to India.

This made indigo more available in Western Europe, and also in the Netherlands via the VOC.
