Pontresina RhB station since July 1st, 1908
This is where a branch of the Rhaetian Railway from Samedan ends. The Bernina Railway originally wanted to operate its network from Samedan, but the RhB fought to the utmost for a direct connection of its network to the up-and-coming holiday resort of Pontresina with its many travelers and prevailed. The RhB "came" with steam, the Bernina Railway was already under power. Accordingly, at the beginning the entire track field was spanned by the direct current overhead line. Early views show that the Bernina Railway runs south from track 1
When the RhB was electrified with alternating current just a few years ago, the overhead line was divided into two fields and the Bernina Railway was given its own platform. This situation only changed again in the 1980s, when the first tracks became switchable in order to make it easier to change locomotives on the Bernina Express.
The railway era only began in Pontresina on July 1st, 1908: At the same time, the RhB's Samedan-Pontresina and Pontresina-Morteratsch routes were put into operation. Seven weeks later, Pontresina-Celerina Staz and Morteratsch-Berninahäuser (Suot). In the first year, the BB only ran between Celerina Staz and Berninahäuser. The rest of the route was not yet completed. A second island operation from July 1st, 1908 was Tirano - Poschiavo.
