The 202-meter-long Carlsbahntunnel, completed in 1847, is the oldest railway tunnel in Hesse. Nowadays there are no longer any rails, the passage is reserved for cyclists and hikers. It's always cool inside, a welcome cooling off on hot days. The tunnel is closed to people between October and April because in winter the bats appreciate the tunnel as a place of retreat and do not want to be disturbed.

Before you get into the tunnel (from the south) there is a steep climb up the mountain. Pushing is the order of the day.
