A first church existed at this point as early as around 800. She coined the name of the place: chapel village. Founded as an aristocratic church, the church was donated to the imperial monastery in Fulda in the early days. In the 12th century, the parish church was a fiefdom of the Burgraves of Kirchberg, who founded a Cistercian monastery here in 1235. The nuns' convent existed for three centuries.
Since 1527, after the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation, the chapel village church has once again served solely as a parish church. Numerous surviving grave monuments inside testify to its great importance as a burial and memorial site in the late Middle Ages and early modern times.

A predecessor even gave it on the ground, on which the today's church stands. It was a chapel around the year 800, which was first mentioned. Hence the name Kapellendorf. This church was feudal property of the burgraves of Kirchberg (today at Jena). In 1235 a Cistercian monastery was founded in the village (Wikipedia).
