City of the Sun
A special feature of the City of the Sun is that the central part, the Carré, is striving for CO2 emission neutrality. The district must generate as much energy itself as it consumes with all its functions (living, working, traffic). The City of the Sun is currently the largest energy-neutral district in the world.
Solar energy is supplied by 3.75 MW of photovoltaic solar panels (in short: PV) on the roofs of the homes and the various facilities. This is part of the 5 MW PV project, which is being realised in the municipality of Alkmaar for 1.25 MW in addition to the municipality of Dijk en Waard.
In addition, energy-efficient houses have been built and three wind turbines have been installed to realise a CO2 emission-neutral district.
The recreational area consists of forest, ecological zones and more than 75 hectares of water with swimming quality. The City of the Sun and the Heerhugowaard-Zuid recreation area should have been completed in 2012, but construction work continued until early 2016 (wik
