The Church of St. Severin is an evangelical Lutheran church in Keitum on Sylt. It was named after Severin of Cologne, a bishop from the 4th century. The church stands away from the town on the highest elevation of the Sylt Geest core. In pre-Christian times, there was a sanctuary dedicated to Freya on this spot. The church was first mentioned in documents in 1240. Official investigations by the monument preservation authorities have shown that the construction of the church's roof structure can be dated to 1216.

Tower and nave of the church

According to Heimreich's chronicle, the church was built in the 11th century. King Canute the Great had lead and tuff stone brought here to build the church in 1017. According to legend, the English architect built four churches at the same time: the church in Keitum, St. Johannis in Nieblum on Föhr, the Old Church in the far west of the island of Pellworm and the old church of Tating on Eiderstedt.
