"With around 34 hectares of vineyards, the Steinberg is the largest contiguous vineyard in the Rheingau. The 3.8-kilometer-long and up to four-meter-high stone wall that the monks once painstakingly built to protect against grape thieves and wild animals is unique. Because of this peculiarity, the Steinberg is often compared to the Burgundian "Clos de Vougeot", as both were built by the same monks. Above all, however, this wall, which has been preserved and restored to this day, protects the grapes in the Steinberg from the cold air currents from the nearby forest and creates a unique microclimate by storing heat. The deep slate soils found here ensure an acidic, mineral wine that can also be stored well. The Cistercian monks already appreciated this and the wines from the Steinberg are legendary in the wine world to this day."
